According to reports, there have been more than 95, 000 LED street lights in Weifang city of Shandong, amounting to 84% of all street lights and landscape lighting fixtures. The number shows a great potential of LED lamp products to dominate the outdoor city lighting.
The city has started installation of LED lighting since 2006, when the city made the first pilot LED lighting applications in the North Sea Road. After calculating the energy saved from LED lighting, Weifang city expanded the LED lighting to other areas including Cravens district, Nursery district, Fangzi district, Hanting district, high-tech economic development zone and coastal zone.
By 2008, the proportion of LED lights in the city's road lighting had amounted to 24%, and the city continued the project of installing LED lighting systems and replacing old street lights with the new energy-efficient lighting fixtures. As a result the amount of LED lights in the city increased significantly in the past three years. It is estimated that the energy Weifang city can save from these lights equals to what can be produced from 23,600 tons of standard coal.
